Eyeglasses As Part of a Halloween Costume

December 26th, 2009 -- Posted in Vision Impairment | No Comments »
Do you have a great Halloween costume in mind and the finishing touch will be a pair of designer eyeglasses? Dressing up as a famous figure in history, such as Theodore Roosevelt or as our favorite mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent will both require a pair of good old fashion spectacles.

There are a whole slew of other characters that you may want glasses for. The trick is to find a pair that will work for your costume and will not cost a fortune. Especially because you will probably only be wearing them once.

Once you have the style in mind that you are looking for, all you have to do is find the pair at a reasonable price.

At the very high end, you can walk in to your local optical shop and ask for a pair of frames with no lenses or lenses that are referred to as plano. Plano means the lenses have no correction. Optical quality frames will set you back anywhere from $60 to a couple hundred dollars. While they will look very nice, this approach may be going a bit overboard for the average Halloween event.

On the other end of the spectrum, you might find a suitable pair at the costume shop. They usually have basic plastic styles for costumes such as Harry Potter or the librarian. But the picking may be very slim. Costume style eyeglasses may do for most cases.

A third option is to look for low power reading glasses. These are very inexpensive, usually in the $10 to $40 range for basic styles and if you can find a pair with a very low power (+1.00 or less) they will not be terribly uncomfortable to wear. You will find a great variety in styles that can match up to any costume idea you may have.

Regarding your vision, a low power reading glass will not hurt your eyes, but it will slightly blur your distance vision. You can always simply pop the lenses out. The glasses will still look real as part of the costume.

It should go without saying that you should never drive while wearing any aspect of a costume on your face. Including dress up glasses or Halloween masks. Have a great Halloween.

BMX Freestyle Bikes

December 19th, 2009 -- Posted in Vision Impairment | No Comments »
BMX freestyle is a type of biking motorcross sport. It first appeared during the 1960s and it has been running strong ever since. This sport is characterized by its tricks. For example base tricks including the bunnyhop, fakie, wallride and catwalk, as well as grind tricks like feeble grind and levitation make freestyle BMXing fun to watch and exciting to perform.

If you are looking for a men’s BMX Freestyle bike, then you may be interested in the Mongoose Override Freestyle BMX Bike. This bike includes 20 inch wheels, U-brakes, freestyle pegs and a frame made from high tension steel. This bike is designed for riders interested in ramp tricks and flatland riding.

If you are looking for a boy’s BMX Freestyle bicycle, then you may want to take a look at the Magna 20 inch Boost Freestyle BMX Bike. This bike has an aluminum frame that is designed to stand up against falls and trick maneuvers, 20 inch wheels, a full rotor and cable set and caliper brakes. This bike also offers both front and rear trick pegs.

A third option that you have is the Micargi Explorer BMX Freestyle Bike. This bike also has 20 inch wheels and a steel frame. Its braking system is composed of alloy U-type brakes. This bike comes in several color combinations including blue and silver, burgundy and silver, black and silver and the ever popular chrome.

When shopping for a BMX freestyle bike make sure you buy one that will fit its rider. The height and weight of the rider are the first things you will want to look at. The height of the bike needs to be just tall enough so that the rider’s feet can touch the ground. The add-ons and features that the bike has should also be taken into consideration. Select a bike that is designed for the type of freestyle riding the bike’s owner wants to do.

Different Types of Eyewear Fashion

December 11th, 2009 -- Posted in Vision Impairment | No Comments »
If someone notices that your eyes have turned slightly red and look dusty, they may wonder if you are returning from a two wheeler ride. In short, you should always use regular eye glasses in addition to a helmet, as they are protective for the eyes against strong winds and fine dust.

Fashion eyewear are used for various other reasons, as well. For example, nowadays, youngsters also need vision correction. They, in particular, want to have better looks and at the same time correct your vision. If they have a broad square face, they can opt for bold framed eye wear. Slipping on these fashion eye glasses, they will be literally reaching out to the young ladies with their new, hot look. Memory titanium frames, as another example, can make the face look casual for evening strolls in the beach, while steel frames can present the image of a top businessman.

Other fashion frame statements point to the fact that:

1) A fair complexion generally goes well with wearing full rim acetate frames, a sure call for Hollywood film signature requests.

2) Some fashion frames have thin lenses of polycarbonate and acrylic materials that have high impact strength. So you can afford to be cool even if your glasses accidentally fall to the floor.

3) Even when passing from a shady place into the hot sun, your eyes need to be protected from UV radiation. If the color of the glass changes from watery to pink color to help with comfortable and cooling to the eyes for this, you have photosensitive eyewear.

4) While swimming, it is common to wear banded goggles to prevent water or insects from harming your eyes. These fashion eye pieces are also used by sky divers and skaters.

5) Some sun glasses are made with a coating on the surface so that the eyes of the wearer are not seen from outside. One particular brand of this type of frame that sells heavily in the marketplace today has gold frames with green lenses to filter infrared rays, so wearers are sure to get elite with this pair.

6) Army and navy personnel use aviator type eyewear whose frame is oblique, teardrop-shaped. This eyewear reflects the seriousness in the wearer’s endeavor.

7) Some glasses are coated to enable easy cleaning and some are coated with anti-reflective chemicals to reduce glare and improve night vision. 8) Nylon frames are used in sportsmen eyewear. These are highly flexible and at the same time strong.

9) Mountain climbers use sunglasses with leather blinders on the sides. These protect the eyes from sun rays around the edges of the lenses.

10) Faded lens are used more often in night clubs. The upper portion of the lens is colored and the lower portion is watery in color. Plus some varieties incorporate a shutter design on the lens. This has created much influence in pop circles.

11) Ladies like their personalities to be enhanced and often try to avoid wearing opting instead for fashionable, soft contact lens of various powers and colors.

All We Should Know About Eyeglasses

December 9th, 2009 -- Posted in Vision Impairment | No Comments »
Along with their popularity, eyeglasses are still under restless innovations. This writing describes comprehensively about aspects of eyeglasses: frames materials, frame styles, lenses, sunglasses and so on.

Both plastics and metals are undergoing a rapid change in new types. For example, polycarbonate frames are created to offer a more tough solution, and frames made of hypoallergenic materials such as titanium and stainless steel can eliminate potential skin allergies in some people. Flexible designs such as spring hinges provide extra durability for children. There are also new types of nose pads of eyeglasses frames such as silicone nose pads.

Eyeglass frame styles require more innovations, since a large amount of wearers change their eyeglasses as they change shoes, handbags as well as some other accessories. Rimless styles offer another completely different look to some fashion fans. Special materials such as wood and bamboo are now used to manufacture eyeglass frames. Currently, there is a clear classification of eyeglass frames in accordance to gender, such as women’s frames, men’s frames and unisex frames.

Eyeglass lenses are also developing rapidly. Nowadays, new designs of eyeglass lenses are thinner even with heavy prescriptions. Aspheric lenses are not perfectly round on the surface. High-index lenses are made of a special plastic, which reduces the thickness. Wavefront lenses take full use of the way light travels through people’s eyes so that they are supposed to provide sharper vision. Polycarbonate lenses are lighter, thinner and more shatter-resistant than traditional plastic lenses. Photochromic lenses can darken in bright conditions and return to clear once bright light disappears. Polarized lenses are designed to diminish sun glare. Anti-reflective lenses are treated with anti-reflective coating to minimize reflected light on the lenses.

Presbyopia is a common and bothersome eye problem in people above 40. Usual single-vision lenses are incompetent to deal with vision problems in presbyopic individuals. One unusual type of single-vision lenses is reading glasses that are exclusively for near vision. Multifocal lens types include bifocal lenses, trifocal lenses and progressive lenses. While a bifocal lens has a near focal point and a distance focal point, a trifocal lens adds an intermediate focal point. The more powerful lens type progressive lens offers a smooth and comfortable transition from one distance to another and also removes the visible line in the lens.

Most of the modern sunglasses provide both fashion and good UV protection. Kids’ sunglasses are designed to flatter the particular needs of children, such as cat-eye shape sunglasses. Prescription sunglasses are a great innovation, which offer a best solution to people who need prescription eyeglasses during outdoor activities. Plano sunglasses are non-prescription eyewear. They can offer more options in material such as titanium, aluminum, and stainless steel. Clip-on sunglasses are becoming more and more popular due to their convenience. Designer sunglasses such as Armani always tend to mimic current trends.

Sports and safety eyewear are another two major categories. Certain sports and recreational activities require special sport sunglasses and performance eyewear for best eye protection and unaffected performance. Some of these types include diving masks, swim goggles, ski goggles, shooting glasses etc… Some dangerous environments such as construction sites require special safety glasses or goggles.

Eyeglass buying is tricky. The glasses you selected should match your appearance, personal taste, face shape and coloring. Some types of lenses do not go with certain frames. For instance, progressive lenses usually do not match smaller, stylish frames. Buying eyeglasses online has both advantages and disadvantages. Careful preparation is necessary.

Healthy Recipes – Help Protect Your Vision with Coleslaw!

November 23rd, 2009 -- Posted in Vision Impairment | No Comments »
We all know that eating junk food can hurt us in the battle of the bulge. But now there’s a new reason to control our intake of these highly processed foods: They may cause eye problems. According to a study by Harvard Medical School’s Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, fatty snack foods may lead to macular degeneration, the leading cause of vision impairment for Americans over 55.

The key to eliminating junk food from your diet is to replace them with healthier alternatives. The good news is there are plenty of healthy foods that contain vitamins that actually promote eye health. Carrots, beef, chicken, cantaloupe, mangos and sweet potatoes all contain beta-carotene (vitamin A), which has been proven to positively affect both night vision and day-to-day eyesight. It also aids in cataract and macular degeneration prevention. Pork, liver, whole-grain cereals and breads, wheat germ, potatoes and legumes contain thiamine (vitamin B1), which prevents lens deterioration. Vegetable oils, egg yolks, milk fat, green leafy vegetables and nuts contain vitamin E, which also aids in lens deterioration prevention. And tomatoes, citrus fruit, strawberries, cabbage, green leafy vegetables and sweet bell peppers contain vitamin C, an antioxidant that helps prevent glaucoma.

There also are other nutrients that support your eyesight. The National Eye Institute states there may be evidence that lutein — a carotenoid antioxidant available in spinach, kale, collards, mustard greens, amaranth, spirulina and red paprika — could reduce eye problems. The Institute states definitively that zinc, found in shellfish, eggs, legumes, herring, liver and milk reduces the risk of advanced age-related macular degeneration and associated vision loss. Additionally, fish, such as salmon and sardines, contains omega-3 fatty acids that are known to promote healthy retinas.

It’s easy to incorporate foods that protect your eyesight into your diet. Carrot sticks, citrus fruit, mangoes, and even sweet peppers and tomatoes make great portable snacks. Fresh carrot juice packs a concentrated dose of vitamin A in every glass and is easy to make if you have a juicer. Or you can try the healthy recipe below, which is designed to taste good while giving your eyes a boost:

Visionary Coleslaw

Makes 8 servings

2 6-oz. containers of low- or non-fat pineapple yogurt 2 T. low-fat mayonnaise 3/4 tsp. salt 1 head of cabbage, thinly sliced 4 carrots, shredded * 1 small sweet bell pepper, finely chopped 1 small onion, finely chopped

1. Whisk yogurt, mayonnaise and salt together in a large bowl.

2. Chop cabbage, sweet bell pepper and onion; shred carrots. Add to the bowl with the yogurt mixture and toss well. If not serving right away, cover and refrigerate.

* It’s best to scrub carrots instead of peeling them. Some of the vitamins and minerals lie near the surface and can be whisked away with the peels.

What Are The Types Of Night Vision Goggles?

November 13th, 2009 -- Posted in Vision Impairment | No Comments »
Night vision goggles use an electro optical imaging device which is able to detect both visible and near infrared energy sources and then is able to intensify these energy sources further in order to provide a visible image for viewing at night. Sometimes people will often refer to them as NVG’s instead. Today’s night vision goggles can either be held by a person in their hands or be mounted on to a helmet.

Although the general public are able to obtain and use these night vision devices, more often than not they are used by law enforcement agencies and the military. Initially these devices were used by the military forces during the Vietnam war and have gone through many stages of development since then and currently the US Military are now using a 4th generation version of the ones originally developed.

The prices of these night vision goggles can cost as little as a couple of hundred dollars to some of them costing around $6,000. However there are some 3rd generation goggles which are of a very high quality and can cost less than a $1,000 and are more widely available to the general public than the 4th generation ones are.

There are two kinds of night vision goggles in use today and these are the passive and active. Passive night vision goggles are able to pick up any light within the immediate area where the person using them is located and then magnify this light several times over by use of the image intensifier.

You will often see this type of night vision being used when reporters are reporting from a war zone and the pictures that you seen on the TV in front of you will have a green tint to it. The reason why green is used in most night vision devices is because the human eye is very sensitive and is able to discern things more clearly when it comes in various shades of green. Plus using green helps the user’s eyes to readjust more quickly once the goggles have been removed compared to other colors that have been tried.

The other type are active night vision goggles. They project an infrared light (the same which you will find in your TV or satellite remote control). They then produce an image to the user’s eye because of the light that has been reflected back.

However in order for these to be really effective an image enhancer may be required to amplify the light further. Today this kind of night vision device is often used in home video cameras and is certainly the most suitable for us to use in order for us to see adequately in the dark at night. But it should be noted that there are some night vision goggles which actually combine the two methods together.

The Advancement In Custom Wavefront Lasik Surgery

November 10th, 2009 -- Posted in Vision Impairment | No Comments »
Many people are familiar with the term “laser eye surgery” and know it to be a type of corrective surgery to help improve various vision impairments. Lasik has become a very popular solution for many people, since it became widely available about a decade ago, in the mid 1990s.

Unlike older forms of eye surgery, Lasik does not necessitate cutting the eye with a surgical scalpel. Instead, lasers are used to do the job. Recently, custom wavefront Lasik surgery was introduced as an advancement to the basic Lasik method.

The phrase “custom wavefront” is actually not as new as might be thought. The term “waterfront” has actually been around for almost a century and was commonly used in astronomy, as a concept of using mirrors and various lenses to manipulate rays of light.

However, the term was applied to the Lasik form of laser eye surgery about a decade ago, in the late 1990s. These same principles began to be applied to the corrective procedures to enhance the outcome of Lasik surgeries.

What really makes the custom wavefront Lasik method different from the standard lasik eye surgery is that it provides the Lasik eye doctor with a considerable amount of additional, detailed information to help him better pinpoint the exact problems in the eye that need to be corrected. This is done by a mapping process that uses the way the light passes through the eye to reveal a three-dimensional image of the interior of the eye.

The Lasik custom wavefront procedure essentially “unravels” the way that the light passes through the eye of the patient. Because of this, during the examination of the eye, the doctor is able to see all the way to the retina at the back of the eye, giving him a view of the functioning, or malfunctioning patient’s optical system. It is this detail that allows the Lasik eye doctor to identify the minute imperfections and damaged areas of the eye that traditional types of eye examinations often missed completely.

The result of this greatly improved ability to see the inner working of a person’s optical system is that the laser eye surgeon can then use this information to perform a much more effective custom wavefront eye surgery. Patients enjoy a greater degree of improvement in their eyesight, when compared to the results of the older Lasik procedure.

The custom wavefront Lasik surgery is still considered relatively new, and it is a more expensive procedure than the standard Lasik vision corrective surgery. However, for many people who are suffering from poor vision problems, the cost of Lasik surgery of any kind is quite small compared to the benefits of improved eye sight that they enjoy with very little risk or complications.

Basic Information About Supplemental Security Income That You Should Know

October 29th, 2009 -- Posted in Vision Impairment | No Comments »
Disability no linger needs to be an unnecessary burden for those affected. A Federal program provides financial support for individuals who are in their senior years or are suffering from blindness or other physical impairments. This program is called Supplemental Security Income or SSI. Established in 1974, SSI replaced programs administered by the national government to support its needy citizens and provide standardized assistance.

What is Supplemental Security Income?

Supplemental Security Income is a stipend provided monthly to citizens who are 65 years old or older or have disabilities. This stipend is paid by the United States Federal government through the Social Security Administration. The payment, however, is made using funds from the U.S. Treasury.

Who qualifies for SSI?

In order to qualify for SSI, a person has to be at least 65 years old, has a vision impairment or is disabled. Visually impaired individuals should either be completely blind or legally blind, in which case they should have a 20/200 vision or less even with glasses on. Their field of vision must also be 20 degrees or less.

To qualify as a disabled person, an individual must demonstrate his inability to engage in SGA or substantial gainful activity, either because of a physical impairment that can be determined medically or a prolonged or continuous mental impairment that is also expected to persist for at least 12 months or might result to that individual’s death.

He or she must also be a resident of one of the 50 states in the U.S.. the District of Columbia or the Northern Mariana Islands. He or she should also be a child of parents serving permanent military duty in other countries for the U.S. or a student temporarily studying abroad.

Some legal aliens may also qualify for SSI, although certain restrictions do apply.

Applicants for the program must also meet the required income limits as stated by the program. Income limits vary depending on the state where the person resides. It is also determined by the type of income the individual receives and on the number of other people who stay in the same residence. An individual’s access to resources other than income should also meet the set limit. In general, a single individual’s resources should not be over $2,000 and a married individual should not exceed $3,000. These resources should also be non-liquid and cannot be readily sold for cash within a period of 20 working days.

How do people apply for SSI?

Applicants might get in touch with a Social Security office in their locality either in person or through a telephone. Certain information may be required and verified. In the case of disability, for example, a person’s disability may be checked through the DDS or Disability Determination Service, in which case the person’s medical history and condition will be assessed or reviewed. The review will be performed by a disability examiner and a doctor. If the disability is not confirmed, the DDS will request the individual to undergo a medical examination which the agency will pay for.

What is the purpose of SSI?

Supplemental Security Income is a means with which to provide minimum income for individuals who have disabilities to help meet their economic needs. It acts as supplementary income for people to cover for their basic needs and living expenses. As such, the amount paid out varies from one person to another since their personal financial situation is put into account.
